Lufthansa’s Airbus A380 will fly again this summer, first to Boston and then New York


Last fall, Lufthansa confirmed it would bringing its retired fleet of Airbus A380s back into service for the summer of 2023. The airline has details now.

The double-decker A380 will begin daily flights between Munich International Airport (MUC) and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) on June 1, Lufthansa confirmed Wednesday.

New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) continues with daily A380 service to Munich starting July 4. The airline said it expects to have four planes in service by the end of the day. this year. Lufthansa now owns eight of four four-engine jets, which have been suspended since travel demand fell to record lows at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The airline sold six more planes during the landing.

Lufthansa’s A380s can carry 509 passengers across four cabins. Have eight first class seats78 business class seats, 52 premium economy class seats and 371 economy class seats.

It is one of the few aircraft in Lufthansa’s current fleet to operate with a first class cabin. The airline also offers first class service on Boeing 747-8 aircraft, which operate from Frankfurt to a number of cities, including Washington, DC, Houston, Miami, Chicago and San Francisco, according to Cirium flight schedules.

Flight rating: Lufthansa first class on Airbus A380

Its Airbus A340-600 also has a first class cabin. That type of fleet was also decommissioned at the start of the pandemic. It was at that time restart due to an unexpectedly rapid return of international travel demand, partly to provide premium cabins for the 2022 summer travel season.

That plane currently operates flights from Munich to Boston and New York. Lufthansa notes that the A380 provides 80% more capacity. It is not clear whether the A340-600 will be redeployed on other routes.

Flights on the A380 will go on sale on Thursday, March 23.
