Bee populations are declining around the world, but Walt Disney World has found a helpful way to help.
Every year, Disney World’s pastry chefs create an elaborate gingerbread show to delight visitors, but it serves another purpose.
After the holidays, the sweet treats are recycled into bee food.
Disney Park shared on Instagram that the gingerbread display was broken up and taken to their tree farm, where it was used for beekeeping.
Surname speak. “This helps reduce bee populations by keeping them well-fed during the winter months, when food is harder to find.”
Once the bees have filled in, the wooden structures used to build the gingerbread house are cleared and stored for next holiday use.
Gingerbread is used to brew, so nothing goes to waste.
While the secret has only been revealed on social media, the annual tradition of recycling holiday treats into bee food has been going on for the past decade.
“Ten years ago, when doing our annual gingerbread screen cleanup, we noticed that bees were very attracted to the sugar on the screen after deconstruction,” speak Barry Stockwell, Planning Specialist with Event Decorating Assistant. “We decided to bring the exhibits to our Disney tree farm and place them in our fields so the bees had a chance to collect sugar on the wooden structures.”
Fans were delighted to hear that the beautiful culinary display had been recycled, not just thrown away.
