Lensrentals shares the most rented cameras and lenses in 2021: Digital photography review

Lensrentals published it Summary of the most popular rented equipment for 2021, which showcases which camera gear is most rented throughout 2021. As we’ve seen over the past few years, both Canon and Sony top the charts in almost every category.

First look at The most rented new products in 2021, Canon took the top spot with the EOS C70 Cinema Camera (RF mount). Cinema cameras take multiple places on the list, with the Sony FX3 in second and the Sony FX6 in fourth. The Nikon Z7 II, despite being announced in 2020, qualified for the shortlist, landing in seventh place. The exceptional black-and-white camera, the Leica Q2 Monochrom, is a hot commodity at number nine. Likewise, the medium format Fujifilm GFX 100S coming in at number 12 is great news for the GFX system. The most popular new lens of 2021 is the Sony FE 50mm F1.2 GM.

By removing the qualifiers for new products, the 19 most popular photo and video devices of 2021 feature a full range of Canon and Sony gear. Aside from the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K (EF mount) in 13th place, everything else is made by Canon and Sony. The top four are Canon EOS R5, Canon 5D Mark IV, Canon 24-70mm F2.8L II and Canon EOS R6. Sony follows in the next three positions with the Sony A7S III, Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS and Sony A7 III.

Looking at camera brand market share, it’s not surprising that Canon takes the top spot with 38.05%, down slightly from 38.46% in 2020. Sony is second with 26.26%, up from 22 .8% in 2020. Blackmagic is far in third with 7.85%, followed by Nikon, Panasonic, Fujifilm and Leica respectively.

The list becomes much more diverse when we look at the market share of lens brands. Although Sigma is in close 3rd place with 11.45% market share, Canon and Sony still occupy the top two positions with 37.16% and 15.76% respectively. Nikon is in 4th place with 9.93%, followed by Zeiss in 5th place with 3.37%. However, Fujifilm and Fujinon are separated on the list, with Lensrentals noting that Fujinon-branded lenses offer higher build quality and performance. If you combine them, they go up to 5.3%, which would beat Zeiss in fifth place.

It is interesting to consider a rental camera with a lens mount. Lensrentals has seen huge growth in rents from 2020 to 2021, but the percentage per mount is still pretty close compared to last year. The Sony E mount rose to third place and rose 4.99% overall. The number one lens mount, Canon EF, is down 3.9%, but otherwise, each mount is relatively consistent. The Canon EF remains the standard lens mount not only for entry-level Canon DSLRs, but also for cinema cameras from brands like RED and ARRI.

If we look at lenses rented by the lens mount, the good year for new lenses from Sony saw E-mount lenses rise to second place (22.81%) behind Canon EF (38.56%) ). Canon RF and Nikon F lenses proved popular, coming in third and fourth with 12.45% and 11.41% respectively. The Nikon Z lens increased by just 0.4%, while the Canon RF scored an impressive 5.01%. It will be interesting to see how that trend develops in 2022.
