GreaterGood donates toys to children in storm-hit and poverty-stricken areas
The Christmas season is all about doing things to show others we care and spreading holiday cheer. This year, donations from philanthropic supporters have allowed GreaterGood, in partnership with Greater Good Charity, to spread more Christmas cheer by sending toys to at-risk and needy children in different parts of the world. areas heavily affected by poverty and natural disasters.
Recently, approximately $24,000 worth of toys, or about 1,500 toys, were given to children in need in an area of high poverty and rebuilding is still underway in the wake of Hurricane Ida.
Outreach Center, a 501c3 nonprofit in Lafayette, Louisiana, has been taking shipments and delivering toys to the most struggling kids in their area.
Most of these families don’t expect their kids to get anything for Christmas, simply because they simply don’t have enough money to buy toys as they work to get their lives back on track. Imagine their surprise when these toys appeared!
“Thank you very much! Our customers love everything,” said Bruce Gilcrease, CEO of Outreach Center.
Outreach Center provide housing, temporary shelter, food, and other services to those who have fallen on hard times. They provide food for the homeless, provide safe transportation to appropriate housing, provide employment assistance, etc.
Their Lighthouse Shelter can accommodate up to 28 adults and children at a time, and they provide shelter, food and laundry services there for up to 12 months while they work with families to help. they get the resources they need to get back to normal and back to being self-sufficient. Their services include child care, healthcare referrals, life skills training and many other needs.
Outreach Center also has an expedited relocation program that helps people secure rental and utility deposits, pay their rent on time, and more. They even work with landlords to make providing housing for those without a stellar rental record a win-win for everyone. Have a case manager work with each family throughout the duration to ensure they remain in the home, keep their bills up to date and have constant access to the resources they need.
Outreach Center do a lot of important work in their communities, but one of the projects that people often don’t consider “important” is to make the holidays fun for children and their families. This may not seem like a necessity, but improving morale can often give families the extra “strength” they need to make big changes.
More importantly, having a good holiday helps people with this need feel human again, as many of them have gone through a period of feeling ostracized and uncared for. It shows them that their community cares and that they are appreciated.
These children will be bigger than the toys they receive this Christmas, but they will never be bigger than the emotion they feel when they receive gifts that are perhaps the only gifts they will ever receive. received this holiday season.
A lot of people have been going through tough times over the past few years. Everyone needs to feel loved and cared for, and your generous support has helped so many people who have fallen on hard times feel the love of the community they lacked.
