Sam Houston Race Park closed its 50-day Purebred live racing season on Saturday, April 9.
Northwest Houston Racecourse will begin in Horse Quarter 2022 an encounter with a respected industry veteran as the new Director of the Racecourse. Bart Lang has accepted the position and will oversee racing operations for Sam Houston Race Park, Retama Park in Selma, Texas, and Zia Park in Hobbs, New Mexico. Born in Timonium, Maryland, Maryland, Lang’s first job was working on Bonita Ranch, grooming, walking, and learning the basics of horse care and training from the highly respected Boniface family. He worked at the racing offices of Oaklawn Park, Arlington Park and Hawthorne early in his career before becoming the first racing secretary at Lone Star Park. He was on board in the fall of 1996 during the inaugural Grand Prairie race in 1997. Lang directed all racing at Lone Star Park for both the Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred meetings. , until May 2020. Most recently, he served as the equity coordinator at Oaklawn Park.
Lang, 53, will be based at Sam Houston Race Park, starting May 16.

He will succeed James C. Leatherman, who accepted the position of Texas state administrator.
Having a racing director to oversee each of Penn Gaming’s three tracks was the goal of the organization, and Dwight Berube, Director of Sam Houston Race Park, wanted Lang to join the company.
“Bart is a respected racing director with a long history in racing in Texas,” Berube said. “He will also play a key role in drawing top connections to our 2023 Houston Racing Festival.”
