Kevin Gonzalez Deciding Emanuel Rivera
By: Sean Crose
Unbeatable superweight Kevin Gonzalez appeared in the bout under Charlo-Castano 2 Saturday at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. The Mexican 24-0-1 faces Puerto Rico’s Emanuel Rivera 19-2 in a scheduled 10th round match.
Rivera stormed out first, hurling the heavy leather. The boxers traded hard hits in the second, while Gonzalez started bleeding from a cut. Gonzalez stepped up the action in season three, effectively putting his men on the ropes. The fourth game saw Gonzalez perform his combos while he continued to push his man back. Rivera seems to come back to life in the fifth season.
Both fighters picked up each other in the sixth inning. By the end of the inning, Rivera looked a little sore. Gonzalez came out of Southpaw in the seventh round before finally returning. Although action slows down a bit in season eight, Rivera seems to be the more active of the two. Gonzalez took the lead in ninth place. Both men slashed each other in the tenth and final round.
The referees ruled in Gonzalez’s favor with the scores 96-94, 97-93 and 98-92.
