Kaiser Permanente announces $3 million in new AI and ML funding

Permanente Medical Corporation this week announced the new Kaiser Permanente Northern California Augmented Intelligence Research Division in the Health and Care Initiative Coordination Center, or AIM-HI.

KP is also earning $3 million in new funding for other health systems that can display real-world results, where artificial intelligence and machine learning have improved patient outcomes.

WHY IT IMPORTANT
With support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, AIM-HI will disburse grants worth up to $750,000 to help drive the use of AI to innovate care delivery. The program will focus on research geared toward evaluating ways algorithms can enhance diagnostic decision-making in healthcare.

A national advisory committee and reviewers from Kaiser Permanente will evaluate the proposals and work closely with select project teams during their two-year funding period.

“We are aiming to dispel the myths surrounding AI in healthcare to demonstrate the promise and positive impact of the technology,” said Dr. Vincent Liu, MD, principal investigator of AIM-HI. this exciting technology for improving patient outcomes.”

The request for proposals is currently open, with letters of intent due by June 30, 2023. Learn more at kp.org/aim-hi.

TREND TO BIGGER WOMAN
Kaiser Permanente recognizes the promise of AI algorithms with important requirements such as early warning systems for patient safety interventions.

“Our early warning systems work 24 hours a day, seven days a week to identify high-risk hospitalized patients,” said Dr. Stephen Parodi, executive vice president of The Permanente Federation, said in a statement. “One of these programs is estimated to save around 500 lives a year. With this initiative, we hope to support the dissemination of impactful work in health systems of all sizes across the globe. nationwide.”

AIM-HI also hopes to leverage large language models like ChatGPT for tasks like streamlining clinical notes and exploring computer vision technology for analyzing medical images for tumors. , oncology and surgical guidelines.

Of course, Kaiser has long been at the forefront of technological innovation, whether innovating its own implementation of AI and ML to achieve significant clinical ROI or opening a medical school with a strong focus on virtual reality.

ON PROFILE
“In addition to supporting algorithmic research, the AIM-HI program will develop best practices and improve AI/ML implementation in diverse healthcare settings,” said Liu. “It’s important that we use these powerful tools judiciously and in a way that scales to benefit patients, physicians, and care teams.”
