Junkyard Gem: 1990 Mazda MPV 4WD

New small truck with four-wheel drive began to appear in large numbers on American roads in the early 1990s, after Toyota and Volkswagen managed to move a number of TownAces and Vanagon Syncros four-wheelers here in the 1980s. GM provide all-wheel drive Chevy Astronomy/GMC Safari starts from the 1990 model year, while Ford and Chrysler was right there with AWD-equipped Aerostars and Travel at the same time. The Mazda MPV 4WD beat Detroit-built AWD minivans at the showrooms for a year, and I managed to find one of those rare first vans here. a self-service yard in Reno, Nevada.

MPV is based on large Mazda Luce platform (known as 929 in North America), and thus rear-wheel drive base models such as the Astro and Aerostar.

The term “all-wheel drive” was not widely used when this truck was new (Subaru cheated by using a character that can be read as a One or one 4 badge during that company’s transition from 4WD to AWD), so some AWD machines came with the 4WD emblem in the early 1990s. The first generation MPVs had a classic look. four-wheel drive system, which requires the driver to choose between modes and can tear the tires (or worse) if driven for long periods on dry pavement when using 4WD.

By Japanese standards at the time, this was a large, spacious truck. It was designed with North America in mind, so buyers in the domestic market were hit by the high registration fees Japan charges for larger vehicles.

Not even 100,000 miles on the odometer.

Something is broken and cannot be repaired cheaply and/or easily enough.

This is arid Nevada, where road salt is rarely used, and this truck has no noticeable rust.

The sound system isn’t quite as appealing as what’s found in the MPV 929’s cousins, but it’s still very good for a 1990s minivan.

Mazda continued to sell MPVs in Asia through 2016, but the last ones for the US market hit showrooms in the 2006 model year. Realized that Americans wanted family vans. At the time, Mazda replaced the MPV here with the CX-9 for 2007.

MPV had good press, 32 years ago.

When you organized your furniture, you used the same type kansei Technology deployed by Mazda engineers in the MPV.
