Here GMC Terrain recalled about a headlight problem that went from fascinating to absurd. It started when GMC detect headlight on 2010-2017 Topographic does not comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). A precise point of low beam light is reflected off the high beam reflector. This casts a small beam of light into the trees and sky beside the road, blocking oncoming traffic. GMC did the right thing, reported the noncompliance to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Because the piece of light comes from the low beam and is four times brighter than the maximum allowable low beam luminance, NHTSA asked GMC to recall 740,581 SUVs. GMC asked for a waiver, acknowledging the bright spot can cause glare while noting that the false beam does not affect other road users. The automaker didn’t receive any complaints, only one comment from one owner saying the lights made a bright spot in the tree across the street. NHTSA denied this request. GMC starts notifying owners in April that they need to come in for a fix after a fix has been developed. That’s the fascinating part.
The absurd part, that Tire Meets Road unconcealed, that’s the fix is ”Headlight Mount Kit”. It’s a translucent tape applied to the outside of the headlight that allows the low beam light to pass through and reduces any potential glare from the caroming beam. Note that the parallelogram of the frosted tape matches the L-shaped frosted tape area along the inside of the headlight housing. That part is already a feature of the lamp, as can be seen in Terrain Denali quick turn 2016.
The fix need a trip to seller Have a technician place a locator pattern on the headlight and place the rhinestone kit in the proper position. GM’s the set of instructions says the whole thing will take 0.2 hours or 12 minutes — the amount of time it takes to check in and out authorized dealer service branch.
The owners were unimpressed, some called the repairs unnecessary and ridiculous, and the tape must make it clear that GMC felt the same way. Some owners said they would skip the recall. Those motorists will find that GMC cannot escape the legal divide, nor can they. The local motor vehicle authority monitors recall compliance. If an off-road owner without “repair” headlights is involved in an accident and may be at fault due to glare from low-beam headlights, the owner may be liable. So go get your stickers and a free cup of coffee served in the lobby.
