Dade City, Fla. – When the Bay Area Renaissance Festival opens this Saturday, there will be an “elephant” and a herd of PETA and the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida members were waiting at the gate. They will all be there to blow a warning to fair-goers that the use of bullhooks — weapons resembling a fireplace poker with a sharp iron hook at one end — to intimidate real elephants. belonging to a distant era, although they are still used at festivals and to warn that interacting with elephants is at risk injury and disease transmission.
