Jonas Folger to replace injured Pol Espargaro at GASGAS MotoGP
Folger races for GASGAS
GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3 is counting the days until Pol Espargaro is ready to return with his RC16 but in the meantime, and from the Grand Prix of the Americas at COTA in mid-April, the team and brand will believe Think about the speed and experience of former MotoGP podium finisher Jonas Folger.
The 29-year-old German racer will make his first MotoGP appearance since 2017 and since stepping into his role as an official test racer. Jonas has previously represented the Tech3 setup – scoring an exhilarating runner-up at his hometown Grand Prix – so he knows the team and culture well.
Pol Espargaro returned to Barcelona last weekend for jaw surgery. The procedure was performed on Tuesday at Dexeus Hospital. He will be monitored for a few days and is expected to be able to go home soon when he can intensify physical therapy and determine a time frame for returning to the saddle.
GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3 will compete for the Gran Premio Michelin de la Republica Argentina this weekend with Augusto Fernandez.
Jonas Folger
“First of all, I really hope Pol is doing well and is back on his feet as soon as possible. I’m sure he has the right people around him. As for me, I’m looking forward to racing again and going to Texas to see all the guys on my old team! I hope we can do a good job and I know it will be a big challenge for me as the testing has just begun. Still, it would be a great opportunity to get up to speed and learn more about the bike. I am grateful and now looking to Texas.”
Nicolas Goyon, Team Manager GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3
“IIt is clear that Pol needs time to fully recover and our thoughts are with him and we are always in touch. Until he’s ready though Jonas’s experimental role coupled with his recent MotoGP experience means he’s the perfect complement. We had some fond memories with him a few years ago and he tested with us in Sepang before this season. He’s a great guy and we’re excited to welcome him back.“
