Jockey Health Day Held at Delaware Park


The Delaware Jockeys Health and Welfare Foundation celebrated Jockey Health Day on Tuesday, May 17 at Delaware Park jockeys’ quarters. Top sports performance and physiotherapist hosted the event for the second year in a row.

A team of four doctors and three athletic trainers provided their services at no cost to the event; Dr. Kelly Ryan, Dr. Megan McQuarrie, Dr. Sean Sussman, Dr. Sarah Robinson, and Athletics Coaches Mandy Minutola, Kennedie Ebersole and Paige Ezell. About 20 jockeys attended the event to undergo physical exams, basic concussion testing and inclusion in the Headcheck health management system. Delaware Park has had a licensed athletic trainer in a live race with a treatment room in the gym since 2018.

Premier PT, in partnership with Laurel Racecourse The follow-up physician, Dr. Kelly Ryan of Medstar, used HeadCheck, a web-based end-to-end solution to enforce concussion protocols, reduce risk, and aid in recovery. HeadCheck gives racers the ability to instantly remove and return riders by sharing possible injury alerts, performing basic tests and physicals , complete an injury report and medical identification, and collect the rider’s emergency contact information and other pertinent information. HeadCheck uses strict HIPAA compliance with multi-level access where personal health information is provided only to healthcare workers. Music participating in the program include Delaware Park, Laurel, Timonium, Charlestown, Finger Lake, Parxand Penn National.

“Myself and our colony of Maryland are very fortunate because of the relationship we have with Delaware in an effort to improve the safety of our local racers. The 88-day Delaware Park meeting opens on Wednesday, May 25 and ends on Saturday, November 5. The live race takes place on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Starting in June, select Fridays will be added through November 4. The first race’s daily posting time is set at 12:30 p.m. at Delaware Park.
