It’s not a match that Jermall Charlo, nor his fans for that matter, want but that the current WBC middleweight title winner has his next opponent.
The successful knockout artist will attempt to dazzle his hometown Houston crowd on June 18, when he takes on competitor Maciej Sulecki. Initially, Charlo had hoped to entice current pound-for-pound star Canelo Alvarez into the ring. However, once the Mexican-born revealed that he would instead challenge WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol, followed by a third bout against hated rival Gennadiy Golovkin, Charlo looked otherwise. .
Immediately, Charlo’s representatives sent a lucrative offer towards the high-ranking candidate and former middleweight player, Jaime Munguia. In the end, though both warriors agreed to confront each other next, their cyber disagreements pushed their fight aside. Now, the 31-year-old will try to defend her middleweight title against a lesser-known target.
In Sulecki’s case, while he proved to be respectable, he lacked the biggest stages. In his first world championship win against Demetrius Andrade in 2019, Sulecki was thoroughly disqualified and simply outclassed, losing every first half on all three judges’ scorecards. However, he had two consecutive wins against two unknown entities in Sasha Yengoyan and Fouad El Massoudi.
With Charlo unable to close the match in the 160-pound division, the middleweight will focus solely on Sulecki. Although he is considered one of the top 160-pound athletes in the world, the number of appearances on his ring has so far been few.
For the past two years, Charlo has only fought once a year. Most recently, he scored a pretty generous winning goal against Juan Macias Montiel, almost a year from the upcoming game against Sulecki.
