After passing up the chance to face Janibek Alimkhanuly for the WBO interim crown for the WBC middleweight belt, Jermall Charlo, Jaime Munguia will be forced to take a longer road to his first world title at 160 pounds.

Initially, Charlo’s team turned their sights to Munguia after failing to secure a win against Canelo Alvarez. The 31-year-old Houstonian’s agent has made a lucrative offer for Munguia to become Charlo’s fifth world title defender. As reported by ESPN’s Mike Coppinger, both Charlo and Munguia have agreed on the financial portion of their highly anticipated duel.

However, their contest officially reached a dead end when the broadcasting rights became a difficult scenario. Although Munguia hopes to cut Charlo’s title reign short, the 25-year-old is not entirely out of the game.

According to the WBC sanctioning body, a wallet auction, which has officially been set for this coming Tuesday, March 15, will determine Charlo’s next required challenger. The centerpiece of the aforementioned purse-string bidding will be the aforementioned Munguia and the highly ranked candidate, Carlos Adames.

Meanwhile, Charlo will continue to operate by taking on an unspecified opponent this summer. The 31-year-old has defended her middleweight crown just once a year since 2020.

Most recently, despite entering the ring as a favorite, Charlo has struggled with the rough-and-tumble Juan Macias Montiel. However, despite Montiel’s many successes, Charlo lifted his record to a perfect 32-0 through a unanimous decision.
