Jaron Ennis didn’t get knocked out but his win was decisive for the Gervonta Davis-Hector Luis Garcia card on Saturday in Washington, D.C.
The welterweight heavyweight defeated the reluctant Karen Chukhadzhian with a decisive blow in the 12-round round, breaking Ennis’ knockout record at 19th place.
All three judges gave 120-108 points, 12 rounds did not score. Boxing Junkie let Ennis win 119-109.
“We are here to dominate,” he said. “I feel like I can throw more punches. I should have stopped that guy and it’s up to me. I wanted him in, but we did what we could.
Ennis (30-0, 27 KOs) stalked Chukadzhian (21-2, 11 KOs) for the entire match and dropped more punches than the Ukrainian.
However, Chukadzhian, a smart, athletic fighter, was more concerned with survival than winning, which made it difficult for Ennis to score another goal.
Ennis would throw a punch, maybe two – some very strong – and then Chukadzhian would use his nimble feet to run away from the next trouble. Plus, Chukadzhian took the best pictures of Ennis.
That is the story of the war.
Chukadzhian sometimes stood his ground, launching eye-catching shots here and there, but he didn’t do enough to win a single round on the judges’ scorecards.
Of course, Ennis had hoped to make a stronger statement on the high-end card but he won convincingly and took another step towards his first title.
“Everybody knows that I want [unified titleholder] Errol Spence and winner Virgil Ortiz and [Eimantas] Stanionis, you know, all the top guys. Take it, you know?
“I will wait for the right time and [Spence] ready.”
