Jaime Munguia: “I’m ready for Golovkin”

Jaime Munguia was devastated as the chance of a lifetime slipped through his fingers.

After his split decision draw against Canelo Alvarez in September 2017, Gennadiy Golovkin appeared poised to do exactly what he believes to be an injustice. With the two ending just a few months later, Golovkin was caught off guard when their contest was postponed due to a positive PED test from Alvarez.

While Golovkin could choose to wait, he instead chooses to face 21-year-old Munguia. However, due to Munguia’s age and lack of experience at the top, the Nevada State Athletic Commission refused to sanction this competition.

Although very disappointed, Munguia firmly refused and began to raise the level of his competition. Since then, Munguia has won the world champion title at 154 pounds. Currently, the Mexican star is moving in the middleweight category and is enjoying his lofty status as a real contender.

This past weekend, Munguia got his fourth win for £160, a decisive one-way victory over veteran player Gabriel Rosado. With Munguia progressing by leaps and bounds over the past few years, the 25-year-old wants to revisit the game against Golovkin.

“I’m ready for Golovkin,” Munguia told a group of reporters after the win over Rosado.

While it was clear in Munguia’s mind that he would prefer nothing more than a battle with Golovkin, the highly ranked candidate could be forced to wait a long time.

Currently, Golovkin is in the middle of training camp as he tries to unify his IBF middleweight belt with WBA belt holder Ryota Murata. The two are currently scheduled to exchange fists on December 29, at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

If Golovkin emerges from their competition as a unified boxer, Munguia is poised to step into the ring with the longtime champion. But while Munguia hopes that a deal between the pair can and will come to fruition, if not, he’s already thinking of a different name for his next ring appearance.

“I also want to fight Derevyanchenko.”

Hearing his name mentioned among the more notable names in the tournament, was something the 36-year-old Ukrainian contender enjoyed. But first, the repeated title challenger will be fully focused on December 5. Tonight, Derevyanchenko will face Carlos Adames.

A win for Derevyanchenko would end his current two-game losing streak. In the world title attempt, Derevyanchenko lost to both Golovkin and WBC belt holder Jermall Charlo.
