DJI’s Mavic 3 Won’t Get Hyperlapse, Panorama, ActiveTrack 5.0, and More Until January 2022: Digital Photography Review
Earlier this month, DJI released its long-awaited Mavic 3 drone. Our review of the third-generation Mavic is mostly positive, although there are some setbacks including the electronic shutter and digital zoom. If you’re looking to buy one now, you need to know a few key features — including Hyperlapse, Panorama, MasterShots, and ActiveTrack 5.0 — won’t be available until January 2022.
It’s been more than 3 years since DJI tracked down their Mavic 2 Pro drone, the first compact and foldable drone that not only features a 1-inch 20MP type CMOS sensor, but also includes Hasselblad’s Natural Color Solution Technology. The Mavic 3 series raises the bar by using a 20MP 4/3″ CMOS sensor for the main camera accompanied by a telephoto camera with a 12MP 1/2″ CMOS sensor, both featuring Hasselblad color technology.
At this point, you can shoot stills with the Auto-Exposure Focus (AEB) feature in sets 3 and 5 and use the Hybrid Zoom function, which allows you to retouch subjects up to 28X. You can also record video clips at up to 5.1K/50p, DCI or UHD 4K/60p, and 1080p/60p at 140 Mbps with H.265 and 200 Mbps with the H.264 codec. Those who opt for the ‘Cine’ version, priced at $4,999 USD, will be able to record using Apple’s ProRes 422 HQ codec.
APAS (Advanced Pilot Assistance System) 5.0, which detects obstacles in all directions and brakes ahead or moves around an obstacle, depending on the option you choose, will be available at launch. What is currently missing is ActiveTrack 5.0, a feature that allows you to identify a subject and control the drone to automatically move with it. DJI says it will even be able to intelligently reposition the subject if it disappears from the frame.
MasterShots, which have drones that fly multiple routes automatically and stitch photos together for instant sharing, as well as QuickTransfer, a new feature that lets you instantly transfer images to your mobile device yourself without having to connect to the remote control. released in the new year.
Although not announced on DJI’s site, but DJI confirmed DPReview that Hyperlapse clips and Panorama photos won’t be able to be captured until a firmware upgrade is available in January. As of this writing, the exact date of the update is unclear.
