There is no doubting the fact that plus size fashion, inspired by menswear are in right now. For proof, just look at every daywear by Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber, or any recent fashion show by The Row, Peter Do, or even Miu Miu (the S/collection). Its S 22 is not only coveted Super small and belly top). But when I commissioned myself to test this trend a few weeks ago, I knew I had to do my best. In other words, instead of just styling women’s clothing. look like menswear, I suppose it would be more difficult to go straight to the source: the real men’s division.
And that is a challenge. Despite the fact that I made a career out of shopping for women’s clothing, adapting to this item took more trial and error than I initially thought. For starters, men’s sizes are completely different from women’s, which means I have to measure and recalculate all of my sizes to fit. Plus, most things are longer, lower, and wider, which means my usual styling tips will have to adjust as well. Which means, as I’ve mastered it, piecing together outfits with pieces I’ve long overlooked begins to give me a fresh perspective—and a lot of inspiration.
Arguably the biggest lesson I’ve learned from adding menswear to my wardrobe is the importance of proportion. For me, most of the pieces that I’ve tried have been looser, especially with pants, that hug the hips and are wider and loose at the legs. To counter that, I tested out pairs that included tops and jackets that were cut and fitted to compensate for the oversized nature of the bottom half of the style.
I also wanted to create well-balanced clothes that clearly didn’t come from the men’s division, but instead, felt in sync with the rest of my wardrobe. In turn, I spent a lot of time swapping out more luxurious items like corsets, heels, crop tops, and wide-leg pants until I found the right combinations.
In the short term, find my four looks this week in menswear that have convinced me to shop at the menswear store more often.
As someone who has spent most of my adult life trying to find the perfect pair of jeans (fits at the waist with no cleavage, wide in the leg, and just long enough to reach the bottom of my boots) without tripping), it feels rather unusual to buy a pair that I know isn’t designed to fit my body. That said, once I accepted the fact that men’s jeans would wrap around my hips rather than waist and not hug my body the way women’s pants do, the baggy style started to develop in me. . In the end, I liked them so much that I bought several pairs of men’s jeans and wore them constantly. What can I say? It’s nice to not be limited to denim pants that you have to lie on the bed to zip.
I like the idea of going a bit against typical winter fashion trends, which is how this look — which includes a lot of white after Labor Day — was born. Since my trousers and turtleneck both fit pretty well, it felt like the perfect occasion to go bigger with a jacket and add a pair of masculine shoes. So I picked up my favorite oversized fur coat from Nanushka’s men’s section and a pair of men’s suede loafers from Grenson.
I discovered this Banana Republic flying jacket on at least a dozen people in the fashion industry, from the stylist Justin Boone to make it public Lindsey Solomon, but there are rarely women, so I wanted to check for myself. I paired the super cozy, furry coat with a pair of ACNE Studios pants I bought for my boyfriend (he ordered them too small so they actually fit me pretty well). Two-tone heels perfectly pull the look together.
Similar to the aforementioned ACNE Studios khaki pants, I first got the idea to buy vintage men’s army pants after stealing one from my boyfriend and wearing them to New York Fashion Week in September. I loved them so much that I started researching vintage styles and sizes, eventually deciding on this super baggy pair of pants. When it warms up, I plan to wear them only with bras and bikini tops, but right now, I’m loving them with this cropped Ganni bomber and my usual Adidas Sambas shoes (also in the men’s category). male).
