Italy says it is illegal to build the Alfa Romeo Milano anywhere outside Italy

Italy not satisfied with Stellantis’ production decisions Alfa Romeo’s first all-electric car – called the Milano – in another country. In reality, of Italy The industry minister said that this decision actually violates Italian law and that he is not actually wrong.

Earlier this week, ailing automaker Italnin revealed its plans. New Milano small SUVnamed after the northern Italian city of Milan, where Alfa was founded in 1910. There’s just one problem: Stellantis want to build Milano in Tychy tree in Polandbased on Reuters. It will be the first time Alfa Romeo will be built entirely outside of Italy. Again, there are laws on the books in Italy that prohibit this kind of thing.

This is more than words Reuters on why you can’t build “Italian-sounding” products outside of Italy and what the country’s Minister of Economic Development had to say about it:

“A car named Milano cannot be produced in Poland. This is prohibited by Italian law,” Adolfo Urso said in Turin, referring to a 2003 law targeting “Italian-sounding” products falsely claiming to be Italian.

“This law stipulates that signs that cause confusion to consumers must not be given. So a car called Milano must be made in Italy. Otherwise, it will give a false indication, which is not allowed by Italian law,” Urso said.

[…]

Urso’s complaint is the latest in a war of words between Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s nationalist government and the Franco-Italian carmaker, as the two sides negotiate a plan to boost car production domestically to one million units.

The law Urso mentioned says it is illegal to present a foreign-made product as coming from Italy. Typically, it is used against food products, such as American-made “parmesan” cheese that resembles Italian “parmigiano.”

When I first read about all of this, I was extremely skeptical that this was true. Surely a country cannot ban this situation, but clearly, it is very true! There’s even a Wikipedia page about itand if it’s on Wikipedia it must be true!
Anyway, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares defends the choice to produce the Milano outside of Italy and explains why it was produced in the first place. The CEO said European automobile news create a small crossover in Poland will be about $10,700 off the final price. Honestly, that’s a good enough reason for me. Here’s what Tavares said Sockets:

“If produced in Italy, a Milano would have a starting price of around 40,000 euros instead of 30,000 euros, which limits its potential,” Tavares said during a roundtable discussion in Milan at the launch of the new model. on the market”.

To date, the Milano is the only Alfa Romeo model produced outside of Italy. Tavares confirmed that the next-generation Stelvio midsize SUV due in 2025 and the Giulia midsize sedan due in 2026 will continue to be produced in Cassino, central Italy. Stellantis will invest more than 100 million euros there to install production systems in Europe for its new STLA Large platform.

It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Honestly, the messy part of me was really hoping things would get crazy because of that. Stellantis and Italian, but I like to keep things spicy.
