Is This the “Canelo Era” of Boxing?

By: Sean Crose

As we head into 2022, it’s hard to imagine Canelo Alvarez’s career continuing on its current trajectory. The man doesn’t just win over and over again. He dominates. And against the competition, excellent, as well. There are people who can’t stand the guy – lonely at the top anyway – but make no mistake, Canelo is the top boxer in the world right now. Others may be ranked higher on the pound for pound listings. Still others – Anthony Joshua, perhaps – may have more fans. But make no mistake, Canelo is the biggest name in the sport.

Boxing is in The Canelo era, although? Is the red-haired star so dominant that it makes him the face that pops into everyone’s mind when they think of contemporary boxing? Maybe not. He may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s likely that more people on the planet know who Floyd Mayweather is than during Mayweather’s prime years. Of course, the same can be said of Muhammad Ali, Ray Leonard and Mike Tyson. The truth is that Canelo isn’t that famous. At least not yet. Perhaps never. In fact, it seems that Canelo himself is indifferent to such things.

It should be noted that there is a stark difference between the warriors who ruled an era and the best warriors of their time. Mike Tyson is arguably NOT the best boxer of his day – but that doesn’t matter. The guy is still legally awesome. What’s more, he’s awesome in a way that simply attracts attention. It’s just the way it happens with the warriors that define the entire era – they don’t have to be absolutes about their time and place, they just need to be near the top and interesting enough to get all the oxygen out of it. room. Everyone else. Ken Norton may have had Ali’s number, but that doesn’t matter. Gene Tunney certainly had Jack Dempsey’s number, but that didn’t matter either. Ali, and Dempsey are the rulers of their respective landscapes, and that’s all it takes. Something to consider.

Canelo, it should be stated, is undoubtedly one of the top boxers today. He might even be the best boxer out there. However, he is not a performer and has never been. He is a serious professional, polite in conversation, and has nothing short of outstanding in the practice of his profession. And he seems to like it that way, in a sense it’s refreshing to see. Just being a master is good enough. Or at least it should be.
