Floyd Mayweather reminisced a bit in his interview with FightHype was posted on Wednesday. “Oscar De La Hoya,” the former pound said, recalling the 2007 blockbuster’s lead with the “GoldenBoy,” “picked the gloves, picked the judges, he picked everything, the weight class, he chooses everything. I know I’m a better fighter. I feel like I’m a better fighter, and I’ve shown you guys that I’m a better fighter. So guess what I did? ” he continued, “I made sacrifices.” Mayweather made it clear in the interview that he now expects Ryan Garcia to make the same sacrifice if he meets Mayweather’s guard, Gervonta “Tank” Davis, in the ring.
“If you feel,” he said, “like you can beat Tank, (ie) you’re the better fighter, then guess what? Make sacrifices. You just fought at 135. What, we’re going to fight in ninety days? We’ll fight for 90 days if he wants to. Anything you want to do… and he’ll be smoking. ” Garcia overtook Javier Fortuna last Saturday night, and is now fully focused on setting up a match against undefeated strong teammate, Davis. However, Garcia also wants to gain up to 140 pounds.
It is a point of contention for Mayweather, who has stated that “in boxing we have to make sacrifices. We know Tanks fight at 135, so if you want to fight Tanks at 135, we can do it before the end of the year.” And what is the probability of Davis moving to 140 to fight Garcia? “Absolutely not,” Mayweather said. “You just fought at 135 (against Fortuna), so why can’t you fight at 135 again… if you really want this battle with Tank, sacrifice yourself.” Mayweather’s old nemesis De La Hoya has been brought out, as it is he who is promoting Garcia.
“Oscar,” Mayweather said, “we can make the fight happen, (but) the fight has to be at 135.” As far as Mayweather knows, it’s Davis’ camp sitting on the bench for this potential bout. “Of course Tank is side A,” Mayweather said. “Ryan has yet to win a title.” Sure, the thunderbolt Davis has held world championships in many weight classes. Garcia, while impressive, has yet to claim a world title.
“The main man in the sport of boxing right now is the one that sticks with me,” Mayweather said, “Gervonta Tanks Davis.”
