Is my climate virtue greater than your climate virtue? – Is it good?

  • Bill Gates told YouTuber HugoDécrypte that he has contributed more money to climate change than Elon Musk.
  • Musk said he turned down philanthropy from Gates because of a ‘multi-billion dollar’ bet on Tesla.
  • The Tesla CEO responded with a “sigh” to Gates’ defense of his climate change record and Tesla’s bet.

“I’m more dedicated to climate change than Elon or anyone else,” Gates said. “I give a lot of money to charity, I support companies – you know electric cars account for about 16% of emissions, so we need to address the other 84% as well.”

“But someone shorting a stock doesn’t slow him down or hurt him in any way,” he added.

Musk said he turned down a charitable donation from Gates because the Tesla CEO heard he had a “shortage” of $500 million, or bet, against the company, which Musk said meant Gates wasn’t serious about climate change.

Imagine people working to seal a crack in a levee wall or dam, to avert an impending catastrophic threat. Will the heroes struggling to solve the problem pause to argue about how many sandbags each hero has taken? Or will they put necessity before ego, and simply set out to save lives?

My question – how seriously are they both taking the climate emergency?
