The Costco member warehouse club, with more than 800 locations around the world, has a huge influx of shoppers coming to save money and discover brands. The stores also sell pet supplies — so you might be wondering if Costco is dog-friendly and if your dog can accompany you in the store to shop.
Are dogs allowed in Costco?
Because Costco sells food, dogs are NOT allowed in Costco stores. This is the same policy that you will find at all grocery stores in the United States. Dogs – including emotional support dogs – are not allowed.
Are service dogs allowed at Costco?
You may bring a trained service dog to assist you in any Costco store with you Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and as directed by Costco. The Costco website states:
“In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Costco has adopted a service animal policy. Rest assured that Costco members traveling with service animals have immediate access to our inventory.”
As at other stores, Costco employees are allowed to ask two questions to service dog handlers:
- Is your dog a service animal?
- What task or function is it trained to perform?
In some states, you can also bring a service dog that is still in training – but that depends State law governing service dogs in training to close.
However, realize that if you have a support dog that dog will Not has the same rights as a service dog. Therapy dogs also do not have service dog rights.
If your dog is not a trained service dog, do not bring your dog to Costco and try to misrepresent your dog as a service dog. Depending on the location, misrepresent your dog as a service dog can be fined up to $1000.
Find a dog-friendly store
While you can’t walk your dog into Costco during shopping trips, many stores still welcome dogs, at least in some locations!
