IOM says number of migrants in Sudan doubles in one week

Speaking at a press conference at the United Nations in Geneva, IOMA spokesman for Paul Dillon said that according to IOM‘S Displacement tracking matrix, More than 700,000 people are now internally displaced by the fighting, which began on April 15.

The number of IDPs increased in many areas, including the capital, where clashes are still ongoing, he said:Last Tuesday, the number was 340,000. And, of course, prior to the fighting, an estimated 3.7 million people were internally displaced in Sudan.”

Run away in many directions

Responding to a question about where internally displaced people are going, Mr. Dillon said the data is currently at a preliminary level and is being analyzed. They have moved to many states, including White Nile and Khartoum.

Migration decisions are influenced by a variety of factors, including whether there is conflict in any given area. However, people have difficulty making money, the distribution of cash has stalled, and the banking system is practically closed.

Fuel is also hard to find and expensive, according to the IOM.

Delivery is hindered

“IOM has stockpiles of non-food items at six warehouses across the country,” An IOM spokesperson said. “But so far, we have not been able to deliver to those in need.

“The war must end and humanitarians must be allowed to continue their work, providing support to those most in need before the situation spirals out of control.”

Secretary General António Guterres on monday condemns looting at the main complex of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in Khartoum over the weekend. This is the latest target by humanitarian institutions since the start of the crisis, now in its fourth week. Most, if not all UN agencies and humanitarian partners, have been affected by the large-scale looting.

information vacuum

“At this moment we do not have any information, cannot even confirm the extent of the looting at the Khartoum office, but again that food, vehicles, fuel, property were robbed. peeled off from WFP, let’s work towards a response for the people in Sudan. And this directly hurts the people of Sudan.” Isheeta Sumra, WFP Communications Officer speaking from the agency’s headquarters in Rome.

The United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) also reported attacks and looting medical facilities in Sudan.

“Since April 15, WHO has verified 28 health attacks, resulting in 8 deaths and 18 injuries. Many reports are being verified,” WHO spokesman Tarik Jašarević said:.

“These attacks include looting, impeding access to health care, violent attacks using weapons, and forced occupation of facilities. Unfortunately, looting is affecting healthcare facilities. And this is what severely undermines the Sudanese people’s ability to seek health care.”

In the same briefing, WHO said 604 people were killed and more than 5,000 were injured since violence broke out in mid-April between rival armed factions, although the United Nations has repeatedly said the figures may be underestimated.
