India’s rape crisis

According to India’s National Crime Records Bureau, more than 28,000 alleged cases of rape of women were reported in 2020 – about one every 18 minutes. Experts believe the real number is much higher because many people don’t report it out of fear.

The number of reported rapes has increased in the following years 2012 brutal gang rape and the murder of a student in the Indian capital New Delhi, possibly due to a greater awareness of the issue since then. Experts say the outrage has helped erase the shame around discussing rape.

Later, reform of the law and harsher penalties for rape were introduced, including fast-track courts to hear rape cases more quickly and a revised definition of the crime. Rape includes anal and oral penetration.

However, high-profile rape cases continue to cause a stir. In September of this year, police arrested 33 men for the alleged gang rape of a 15-year-old girl in Maharashtra.
In a separate case that month, a dead woman after she was accused of rape and assault with an iron in Mumbai. And in August of this year, a 9 year old girl gang raped and murdered in Delhi.
