How often can a gadget expose you to your own weaknesses, especially the lies you tell yourself?
Not often, I told myself.
I can often resist the latest, greatest, most hyped piece of tech.
Until I’m sure I don’t just want it, I need it.
Oh, okay, sometimes I can have a flexible definition of need.
Weakness. I can’t stand being weak
However, I was worried when Apple released MacBook Air M2.
I’ve been using Airs since Apple invented them. I always tell myself that they are the best laptops for me and they are the pinnacle of laptop design.
Yes, it is horror moment with Butterfly keyboardbut oh my god, it looks like Apple can finally pay compensation for the heinous attack of form against function.
But the M2 MacBook Air seems to represent a departure from the old Air design. And yes, as I confessed beforeI began to crave it for pathetically superficial reasons.

There are two things that I keep staring at: midnight colors and new, non-spiky shapes.
I tried going to an Apple store and refused to buy one. Perhaps I was unduly influenced by an Apple store clerk who once told me Air is merely a Honda Civic.
But a few weeks before making a long trip to Europe, I couldn’t stand it. Well, my old Air liked another frayed Apple cable, and the M2 has a new cable design, including MagSafe.
That is, at least, how I rationalize it for myself.
And then there’s the remarkable fact that an Apple store actually has midnight 1TB M2 MacBook Air in stock.
Resistance is futile. In fact, it doesn’t exist, even if I still wonder if this laptop is worth the price.
The lies I told myself
With almost any gadget, playing with it in the store is one thing. Bringing it into your daily life is another story — and I use my laptop at least 12 hours a day.
So when I started using my midnight M2 Air — did I mention it has that beautiful bluish, black color that seems to change with the mood of the day? – I endure special feelings.
Gone are the sharp edges of the old Air. Instead, it’s something that feels oddly balanced yet very light.
Please, I wallow in disbelief without even trying, but this is a truly uplifting experience. It provokes silly thoughts, such as “Why didn’t they make laptops like this before?” If your answer is “Sir Jony Ive,” I won’t stop to stop you.
I’ve obviously lied to myself about the Airs before. Tapered edges can really be uncomfortable. Keeping it on my lap causes the sharper edges to go deeper into parts of my skin. I put up with it because it’s lightweight and looks pretty nice when closed.
Can we go back to that midnight color for a while? It is actually quite gorgeous. When closed, it’s the most elegant MacBook I’ve ever seen. And I realize how pathetic and ridiculous I sound here.

Some (like ZDNET’s MacBook Air M2 . review) shows that the M2 Air has slightly worse battery life than the M1. I didn’t notice that. I’ve noticed that it’s fast and the screen is slightly larger and its Retina paths help with video — and live football — more interesting.
I also noticed that MagSafe is no longer what it used to be. Previously, it flew out of the socket with minimal force. Now, you have to pull it hard before it comes apart. I can’t decide whether this is good or bad. However, I prefer the sturdier feel of the cable.
It all ends in tears
Okay, I’ve told you enough, my head has been turned upside down. MacBook Air M2 – did I mention it’s a beautiful midnight color?
But none of this positive story has a happy ending.
So as I write this, I’m staring into space, berating myself for being so impulsive.
You see, but a few weeks after I bought the M2 Air, prices start to fall. Then it went down even more. Maybe this is something to do with Laptop market outlook in 2023.
Some proposal report The M2 Air — yes, the midnight color version — is already on sale for under $1,000 on Amazon.
Why can’t I wait a little longer? Why should I surrender when my resistance should be at its strongest?
The whole experience has made me determined not to be so weak in 2023.
I wouldn’t let gadgets lure me in like this one. I’ve been strong enough to withstand all phones since the iPhone 12, so now I’m confident that no watch, no tablet, and certainly no MacBook can make it through the room. My player is so easy.
This is a challenge for all utility manufacturers. See if you can get me to buy one of your products next year. It won’t be easy. I will bet on myself to win.
Unless, that is, you are selling a robot dog that works perfectly.
