This week, Hyundai announced details of Hyundai Home, a service that allows EV owners to purchase charging hardware, solar, and energy storage at home through a website.

Hyundai Home seems to be essentially a collection of home charging stations, solar panels and energy storage systems that customers can buy in one go. It also offers three bids per installation drawn from Electrum’s network of electricians. Hyundai says the Electrum will also provide “energy advisors” to guide customers through the process.

This could prove to be a great solution for consumers overwhelmed by the large number of potential combinations of home power hardware, but what’s been missing from the Hyundai Home so far is the hardware to deal with. problem off-the-grid capabilities of Hyundai’s E-GMP platform. Vehicles based on this platform, such as the Ioniq 5, are equipped with bidirectional charging, which theoretically allows them to discharge energy into a home energy storage system as backup power when need.

In contrast, what is Ford selling? Lightning F-150 owners need to power their homes during a power outage, even though that system hasn’t yet taken advantage of the grid-supporting capabilities of bidirectional charging. The Nissan Leaf has for years had hardware for two-way charging, available in other markets, but Nissan only approved it recently. bidirectional charger for US Leaf. The automaker claims it can ease the strain on the grid by allowing electric vehicles to adjust to fluctuations in demand.

That’s not the only part of the Hyundai EV push that hasn’t arrived in the US yet. It hints at an expansion sign up for its Ioniq EVs. But like the Hyundai Home, these could grow as the EV lineup fills up. The Ioniq 6 sedan is expected to arrive in the US in the first quarter of 2023, followed by the Ioniq 7 SUV in 2024.
