Huge plumes of smoke pour from Trafalgar Square pub as London firefighters tackle ‘challenging’ blaze | UK News

More than 100 firefighters are tackling a “challenging” blaze at a pub in Trafalgar Square in central London.

Huge plumes of smoke could be seen rising from The Admiralty pub after the fire broke out just before 5:50pm on Tuesday.

Initially, 10 fire engines and 70 firefighters were called to the scene, but this was later increased to 20 fire engines and about 125 firefighters in “arduous” conditions.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said half of the pub’s basement was on fire.

Station Commander Keith McDermott on the scene said: “Due to difficult, challenging and hot conditions inside the basement, we have increased the number of fire engines and firefighters on the scene.

“About 150 people evacuated the pub and surrounding businesses before the brigade arrived.”

An LFB spokesman added: “The Trafalgar Square pub fire is under control. We will likely be on the scene in the coming hours.”

There have been no reports of any injuries and the cause of the fire is unknown.
