Spring has arrived, and that means flowers are blooming everywhere you look, and they make great photo subjects. Of course, you can shoot them in a natural way to bring out the light and surroundings, but a black background can add a sense of drama and showcase the vibrant, eye-catching colors of the flowers. It also doesn’t need much equipment to do so! This great video tutorial will show you what you need and how.

Even if this isn’t your normal job, it’s a great exercise in the basics of light, especially about the inverse square law. Remember this says that light intensity is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source. To put it more simply, the power of light tends to go out faster than our intuition can make us think. We can use this to our advantage by creating exposures where the subject is close to the light source, everything in the background is far away, and the exposure parameters are such that artificial light is the main source, leads to good effects.
