How to Set Hair Lights for Better Portraits

While it’s entirely possible to create compelling portraits with just a single light, switching to a multi-light setup opens up a plethora of creative and technical options that would otherwise be impossible. it will not be possible. One of the most useful of these is the hair lamp and this great video tutorial will show you how to properly place the light for best results.

Coming to you from Daniel NortonPhotographerThis awesome video tutorial will show you how to properly position your filament light for portrait photography. The reason a filament light is so useful is because it can help separate your subject from the background. When you use a background that has a similar color and/or tone to your subject’s hair, the two can start to blend and it can be difficult to tell where the background is ending and where it’s starting. Filament lights overcome this problem by directing a second light at your subject from behind, creating a halo or rim that distinguishes the subject from the background. This effect is often subtle, but it makes a big difference in the final image. Check out the video above for the full synopsis from Norton.
