How to Get Monkey Smallpox Vaccine in NYC


New York state will receive 110,000 additional doses of monkeypox vaccine from the federal government, officials announced Thursday.

They are part of the batch 800,000 doses that the federal government plans to distribute. About 10 percent, or 80,000 of those doses, will go to New York City; 30,000 will go to the New York State Department of Health. Amount will deliver over the next four to six weeks, Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement.

More than 1,100 people in New York City tested positive for monkeypox virus at the end of July – nearly all of them mature man.

Here’s what you need to know about the monkeypox vaccination in New York City.

During the current outbreak, monkeypox has spread mainly through close physical contact with an infected person. In New York, the virus is mainly spread among men who have sex with men. It causes rashes and pustules, and its main mode of transmission is through direct physical contact with the sores.

It can also be spread through contaminated objects from the patient, such as bed sheets and clothes, and through respiratory droplets. Researchers have found the virus in bodily fluids such as saliva, urine and semen, but there is controversy over whether it is sexually transmitted or just through skin-to-skin contact.

Mature men who have sex with men and have multiple partners in the past 14 days eligible to be immunized in New York City. Close contact with infected people also qualifies.

Among those who are eligible, the Ministry of Health strongly encourages those whose sexual partners have shown signs of smallpox in monkeys to be vaccinated. The department also encourages eligible people who have met their partner through social media platforms like Grindr or at mass gatherings to get vaccinated.

Eligible individuals with a weakened immune system condition, such as HIV, or a history of dermatitis or eczema are also encouraged to get vaccinated.

Ministry of Health have a website where people can make appointments. All appointments were filled by the end of July, but people are encouraged to check the website for loopholes arising from cancellations.

The Department of Health said that it will directly notify those in close contact with the infected person how to book an appointment.

The state is expecting 110,000 additional doses to be made available in the coming weeks.

In mid-July, Governor Hochul announced that the state and city have received more than 28,000 doses, and another 32,785 are being provided by the federal government.

“We will continue to work closely with the Biden administration to ensure New York gets its fair share of the monkeypox vaccine,” said Governor Hochul.

New York City Start work of the vaccine at the end of June. The city did not publicly announce the availability of its preferred monkeypox vaccine until 30 minutes before appointments were available. News of its availability spread on social media and through word of mouth.

Hundreds of people, mostly white men, stood outside Chelsea Sexual Health Clinic to receive their blows. Some of those men declined and encouraged booking online because there weren’t enough photos. People have also experienced glitches on the appointment scheduling site.
