How to Capture Deer and Big Mushrooms

In this informative video, “The Outsider,” Rob Cottle and Geraint Radford head into the wilderness of South Wales to photograph deer. Along the way, they talk about wildlife photography techniques, the toolset they use to shoot, and learn about close-up and close-up photography.

Rob is a successful professional wildlife photographerwhen Geraint is famous for its ability to take macro photos. The longest lens that Geraint owns is Olympus 60mm f/2.8. So Rob lent him is Olympus 40-15mm 40-150 f/2.8 PRO . Lens and 2x . remote switch while Rob uses Olympus 150-400 f/4 TC1.25 IS PROFESSIONAL. Both have their lenses mounted on camera OM-1.

Even if you’re not an Olympus or OM System owner, the video is worth a look to see the techniques the two photographers used to get excellent photos, as much of what they say is the same. apply to other systems.

In the video, Geraint uses the 60mm lens on his camera to demonstrate a high resolution mode that increases resolution to 50 megapixels when used in handheld mode; on a tripod, it can produce 80-megapixel photos. Meanwhile, later, he went looking for some mushrooms to photograph. He explains the focus settings to stack the shot so he can focus on the entire mushroom but keeps the autumn background colors blurred because he uses a wide aperture.

Geraint also fits Rob’s flexible and affordable Olympus 9-18mm . lens to capture some close-up images of the giant parachute mushroom, again use the High Resolution mode. Rob talks about the settings on his camera to photograph a deer partially obscured by foliage and gets some great shots. There’s also a great slow motion scene about a female starling eating raspberries.

Of course, as always with these guys, this video is super fun and also has some great photos. They plan to do Q&A on YouTube videos, so be sure to ask any questions there.

I interviewed Geraint for Fstoppers late last year; you can Read that article here. Rob, I interviewed almost two years ago and talked about How technology is changing photography.
