Cupra Formentor 2025 has an angry look, drift mode

Cupra launched the best-selling car in Australia, the SUV Formentoran overhaul.

With a new shark nose and lighting details on the outside, a new infotainment system and a new plug-in hybrid powertrain option, it was revealed alongside Leon hatchbacks and wagons.

While the new look is attracting attention, it’s not the biggest news here.

The Cupra has a powertrain overhaul for 2025. In Europe, the entry-level model has a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a six-speed manual transmission with 110kW of power.

Three variants will be offered with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 150kW with all-wheel drive at the entry level, 195kW with front-wheel drive in the mid-range model and 245kW with four-wheel drive. in the top model.

That premium engine is also offered with a version of the Torque Splitter rear differential offered on the trim level Volkswagen Golf R And Audi RS3.

That opens the door to features like Drift Mode, which sends all of the engine’s torque to the outside rear wheel to let this all-wheel-drive SUV shred donuts until you’re satisfied.

It will also be available with a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine, a 2.0-litre diesel engine and two plug-in hybrid models. Both combine a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and a 19.7kWh lithium-ion battery pack, good for a range of more than 100km in electric mode.

The entry model produces 150kW and the more expensive model produces 200kW. DC charging up to 50kW is provided, while AC 11kW is also available.

In Australia, the Formentor is available with a choice of 140kW (V), 180kW (VZ) and 228kW (VZx) petrol engines, along with the VZe plug-in hybrid.

Behind the wheel, the Formentor is equipped with a new 12.9-inch infotainment system with a backlit touch slider.

It is running new software in line with Volkswagen Group partners, designed to make key functions easier to access on the road.

There’s also an optional 12-speaker Sennheiser sound system.
