How to Brighten and Take Night Portraits

Shooting portraits at night can be an effective way to add a bit of drama to your images and open up entirely new creative avenues. If you’re interested in learning how to take portraits after dark, check out this great video tutorial that will show you what you need to know to get it set up and up and running.

Coming to you from Ashley Boring with Westcott Lighting, this great video tutorial will show you the ins and outs of taking portraits at night. One of the most basic difficulties you will encounter when photographing people at night is getting enough light for your autofocus to work reliably. If your strobe light has a pattern light, this may solve the problem, but if not, an easy fix I used when I only had a basic light was to carry a portable light small. I would hold it with my left hand and the camera on the right, then turn it on for a few seconds to focus, then turn it off again just before I click the shutter. Watch the video above for a full Boring summary.
