Magic Johnson not only leading a legacy on the court, but also in the hearts of Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade.
In an April 21 interview with Tonight’s receptionGabrielle and Dwyane mentioned how Cookie Johnson and Magic’s actions as a parent towards their son EJ Johnson– who came out as gay in 2013 – helped shape their journey with Zaya Wade14 year old who came out as transgender in 2020.
“It’s all about perseverance and putting your family first and loving every family member equally and openly. And they showed us the way,” Gabrielle shared. “They were the first people we called, ‘OK, we moved to LA, what do you think is the best school for Zaya?’ And they gave us the blueprint.”
Dwyane also feels that Magic is an idol to him as a parent.
“When I see a Black man, a professional athlete, stand up for his kids, no matter what they’re doing in life, just be proud of who they are and who they are. going to be,” said Dwyane, “It made it easier for me to say, ‘I’ve seen one of my idols do it, a big brother, I can do it too.’
