How Law Roach is getting ready for the 2021 CFDA Awards with Zendaya

It’s been almost 24 hours since Zendaya was named a Fashion Icon at the 2021 CFDA Awards and Law Roach is still on the high end. “I think it will sink within a day or two,” he told ELLE.com by phone. As the actress’ longtime stylist and visual architect, Roach was pressured to choose the right looks for great honor (Zendaya made history as the youngest ever to receive this title). After trying on two other outfits, they finally decided custom Vera Wang design in a hot red that gives serious energy to the protagonist. “My whole thing with clothes is that they have to make me feel something,” adds Roach. “There has to be an emotion, and I think that’s what that particular look can tell both of us.” Of course, Roach also had to dress himself – so that he would fit in with his star client naturally. Here, he guides us through his preparations at the Lotte New York Palace hotel for one of fashion’s biggest nights.

The dress was custom-made by Vera Wang, based on a pattern from her fall 2019 ready-to-wear collection. It’s actually made with fabric from that collection. I think that’s really important: [Wang] didn’t have to produce anything new for me — we used something she already had in stock. I’m so glad she wanted to make that happen.

[The look is] very me. I’ve always loved that collection. [Wang] worked with a lot of plaid.

That is my name! That’s what Vera has done before—style roman numerals, even at weddings.

These Dsquared2 shoes are from their KISS inspired runway collection. It’s super tall – I think there’s a six-inch pedestal – so it gave me so much height that I needed to carry the dress. I’m a big fan of the band’s fashion. They are iconic and timeless in form.

That [Augustinus Bader] moisturizer is really good.

I need to have a little zhuzh, a small statement.

My hair was braided. Basically, Zendaya and I have the same hair.

The ring has my initials [on it] is Jennifer Fisher. This is my first time wearing it, and a great moment to showcase it. The watch is Audemars Piguet and has a rubber band, which feels very cool to the hand.

I actually wear the Jacob & Co ring. bears his name in black diamonds almost every day. I just love it, so much.
