I really don’t think I need a new pair of shoes. I’m not kidding; I took up all the floor space in our tiny Manhattan coat closet with boots, I have a three-tier shoe rack in my closet full of sneakers, and I even have a stacked four-tier shoe rack to hold all of my summer sandals. So when I say, I don’t think I need shoesI mean it.
There’s a really good chance that I’m also a shoe hoarder. Since my feet stopped growing, I refused to wear shoes. Even if they’re all drunk on beer from college parties or plastered with mud while walking my dog or literally have a hole in the soles of my shoes, I just can’t seem to part with them. Back home in Chicago, my mom really started throwing away the shoes she thought I wouldn’t miss. Despite my arguments and protests, I knew she was right. So, instead of getting rid of old shoes to make room for new ones (natural reason), I decided to stop buying shoes altogether. For a few months, that strategy worked perfectly fine for me. And then I looked at Nordstrom.
There are so many styles that I didn’t know I needed, my cabinets aren’t there yet, and I keep adding to my cart as I scroll through. As the fraction of me saying “no” started to grow, I decided to take a therapeutic countermeasure: write down what I would buy instead of buying it. And so, this article was born.
