The Highway Safety Insurance Institute (IIHS) has been crash tested in 2021 Ford Bronco. That’s mostly good news, but it’s a bit short in a few categories. As a result, it just missed being named a Top Safe Pick. But its ratings seem to put it first Jeep Wrangler.
In crash test, the Bronco rated “Good” the highest in most categories, including difficult minor duplication tests. But it’s weak in one category: head restraints. The IIHS found that “the test dummy’s neck was subjected to a moderate amount of force during a simulated rear-end collision”, far too much for the “Good” rating. It still received the second-highest “Acceptable” rating. Also preventing the Top Safety Pick award are the headlights results. All Bronco headlights are rated as “less-than-edge” second due to low light in the corners.
The rest of the test results were solid, with forward collision prevention receiving a top “Premium” rating in vehicle-to-vehicle situations and a second “Advanced” rating. two for pedestrian-vehicle situations. The child seat’s LATCH anchor access is rated “Acceptable”.
While the Bronco didn’t quite get the Top Safety Pick, it did a bit better than Jeep Wrangler. The Wrangler scored best in most crash tests, including the headrest test that challenged the Bronco. But it received a “Margin” rating on the driver’s small overlap test, notably worse than the Bronco. The IIHS did not evaluate the Wrangler for minor passenger-side overlapping effects. Furthermore, most of the headlights available on the Wrangler are rated “Poor” and at best just “poor”. The Wrangler’s forward collision prevention systems are all optional, while the Bronco includes standard systems.
