One of the biggest fears of any pet owner is their pet going missing.
But this story has a happy ending thanks to brave rescuers and a microchip.
A family in Colorado goes daily searching for their beloved dog that went missing two weeks ago. They refused to give up hope and were overjoyed when they received a call from the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Area (HSPPR) saying they had found Jessie Lee.
The adorable puppy had survived alone in the wilderness for two weeks before being found stranded on a cliff 50 feet above Fountain Creek.
The charity’s animal law enforcement (ALE) team rushed to save the dog after receiving the call.
Officers Barker and Johnson located the dog on the cliff but were unable to reach her. Thankfully, a man living in the area lent his climbing gear to officers.
The risky rescue involved Officer Barker plunging the dog with an unsteady stance.
“Officer Barker anchored himself to a sturdy wooden fence post and began to pounce on the dog. When the dog saw Officer Barker, it immediately wagged its tail and crawled towards her, but the ground was sliding out from underneath the dog,” posted animal shelter.
Officer Johnson quickly grabbed the pole and lowered it to Officer Barker, who held the dog by the neck and shoulder.
HSPPR said: “When the dog was finally in Officer Barker’s arms, Officer Johnson lowered a secondary leash that was fastened to a makeshift harness for the dog.
When both the dog and the officers were safely off the cliff, they discovered the dog’s nametag read “Jessie Lee”. She was brought back to the shelter and her employer was notified immediately, thanks to her microchip.
“Our team at Lost & Found called them and before we could tell them the good news, owner Jessie Lee asked if we had found their beloved puppy, ” Written shelter.
The first thing the family arrives the next morning to pick up their beloved dog.
People praised the heroic efforts of the officers but also noticed that one of the officers was named Barker. “That’s great! And how perfect that officer’s name is Barker”, one commented.
HSPPR is the largest animal welfare group in Southern Colorado and reunited 4,700 lost pets with their families last year. They advise pet owners to have lost their pet to take three steps: search for pets online, submit lost pet reports and visit shelters, and update microchip contact information.
This fun reunion is a good reminder to keep your pet’s microchip up to date.
