Hoon spectators and spare tire wearers can be jailed for 1 year under the new law
Spectators and promoters of ‘hoon’ events, along with players using fake registration plates, face up to a year in prison in Queensland under new regulations passed by parliament today.
- It will now be an offense to participate in or be a spectator at a group honor activity
- It is now a violation to organize, promote or encourage others to participate or be a spectator at an activity honoring the group.
- It will now be an offense to possess items such as fake number plates
According to the Queensland Road Safety Strategy, the economic cost of road injuries in 2020 is $6 billion and is responsible for around 15% of hospital admissions.
Queensland Police Minister Mark Ryan said. “If you want to tear our roads, we’ll tear your car.”
“If you want to be a spectator at a big event, you’re breaking the law.”
“If you promote a celebratory event it would be an offence,” he said.
According to 9News, the offense can land the offender in jail for a year or fine up to $6,000.
Bizarrely, one of the hoon offenses is carrying a spare tire – hopefully there’s a self-determination clause in it.
