When Aston Martin announced plans to turn Scion iQ into a luxury car, people were understandably confused. Surely no one will buy it, right? YYou can understand why Aston Martin would want to try it because the automaker needs to find a way to meet the emissions requirements, but really? A renamed city car? And we were right. Sales were so bad that Cygnet was canceled after only two years. In spite of Aston made a pretty cool V8 powered car.
Earlier today, I decided to look up how much used Aston Martin Cygnets sell for. If no one wanted it at the beginning, surely no one wants it now, right? Wouldn’t it be fun to import Cygnet and drive it around? People get confused and excited when I tell them it’s an Aston Martin. I mean, these days I have to assume most used cars are too rich for my blood, but I wanted to see how far I’d come.
Turns out, the whole “they only ever built a few hundred” thing works here, and Cygnet is too expensive to buy as a joke. They are also too expensive to buy as a regular car. Some of them are in the low $40,000 range, but there are more than a few listed for more than $60,000. Damned, there’s even one in Spain listed for $75,869.
That’s real Aston Martin money! Will the DB9 be the cheapest car to own? Nothing. But at least your $50,000 will get you a V12. Imagine you explained to your neighbor that you paid more for a renamed Toyota than for their Rapide. “No, you don’t understand. This car is very rare and special!” Sure, buddy. Enjoy your Aston Martin no more than 100 hp. I mean, I totally understand that when only a few hundred examples exist, rich people will pay high prices to get one, but that doesn’t mean I’m no longer confused as to why they are. back pay so much for Cygnet of everything.
