We may have just gotten our first look at one of these Mazda’s rear-wheel drive cars are highly anticipated. The upcoming Mazda CX-60 has been spotted during a promotional or promotional filming in Japan.
A surveillance video captured two cars driving down a coastal mountain road ( videotapes has since been taken down), but the screenshot depicts a larger SUV the CX-5 is said to be built on top of Mazda’s upcoming big car platform. A number plate that reads “Mazda CX-60” in the company’s official font confirms that it’s the upcoming SUV.
Mazda is planning four SUVs based on its rear-wheel drive LVP platform. Smaller and narrower two-row CX-60 and three-row CX-80 are expected for Japan and Europe, while larger two-row CX-70 and larger three-row CX-90 will go to USA. those for the US market, will be available with Mazda’s Skyactiv six inline engine and some electrification, possibly a PHEV.
The CX-60 is the first time we’ve seen a finished car built on the Hiroshima company’s RWD platform. The cars have Mazda’s signature grille, though it’s wider than we’ve seen on other models. The headlights are also larger and hang below the wings of the grille, which is the first time we’ve seen Mazda’s Kodo design language. V-shaped openings can provide additional airflow or fog lamp housings.
Proportions and stance reminiscent of other rear-wheel drive SUVs on the sporty side of the spectrum, like Infiniti FX or BMW X5. A white variant looks more luxurious, while a sport-oriented variant carries Mazda’s branding soul Red highlights with black outline and black wheels. Interestingly, both trims have a cutout along the wheel arches, which seems to make room for the “rugged” plastic cladding commonly found on intersect today, although none of the cars in the video have them.
While unmistakable with Mazda, the design is surprisingly bland. Mazda took it out of the park with their exterior, most recently seen on CX-50 has just been revealed. Some of the CX-60’s features, like the drooping headlights and the V-shape on the front apron, don’t look like the rest of the car, either. Not bad; is only characteristic of Mazda. Mazda sells CX-8 in some smaller markets CX-9, so if history goes on, the CX-70 might look pretty similar to what you see here.
