The story “Lassie” about a dog saving someone by warning others sounds sensational, but it actually happens. Dogs can tell when someone is injured, either through smells, sounds, or facial cues. They also know that barking will get people’s attention.
In Sibonga, southern Cebu, an intuitive dog saved the life of an abandoned baby by seeking help. Around 11 a.m. on Christmas Eve 2020, Junrell Fuentes Revilla was riding his motorcycle near a dumpster when the dog ran after him and barked. Curious about the puppy’s behavior, Revilla followed him.
The dog led Revilla to the site, where he was shocked to discover an abandoned infant wrapped in a towel. Police master Sergeant Venus Tampos of Sibonga Police’s Women’s and Children’s Protection Desk told The Freeman the baby had definitely just been born. His umbilical cord was still hanging from his navel when the dog brought Reville to him. For this tiny child, every second counts.
Lucky The little dog was determined to seek help, and Revilla knows how to listen. The baby was eventually cared for by the City’s Social Welfare and Development Office. Authorities are urging the mother who abandoned the girl to come forward and anyone with contact information.
Meanwhile, local animal rescuers are concerned about the sweet dog, hoping to find him a home.
Complimenting a hero and his family
Thankfully, the little hero dog was not actually a stray, as authorities had suspected. His name is Blacky, and his family raises and takes care of 10 dogs. Kuya Lyndon, Blacky’s carer says:
“No matter how difficult life is, no matter how poor I am, I still raise all my dogs and take good care of them.”
In recognition of Blacky’s good deed, the animal welfare group Pawssion Project has offered to raise money and donate pet supplies to his family. Hope For Strays share on Facebook:
“@Pawssionproject is raising funds and we will be bringing groceries, food & pet supplies to this humble and wonderful family in return for the good deed their hero dog did.”
In the end, the group brought groceries, pet supplies, and extra money to Blacky’s family. They want to repay the people who taught this sweet little dog so well.
“Thank you so much for giving us a tool to reward such a good boy! It was an honor to meet this angel.”
Good boy, Blacky! This dog deserves a TV show of his own.
