The vet killed the dog by mistake, but it still fights for survival against all odds

Brittany Turnbill took her 8-year-old Shih Tzu, Sugar – whom she lovingly calls her “daughter” – to her local vet for a simple ear infection. But what started as a routine visit has turned into a life-or-death emergency when a fatal mistake occurs.

Instead of receiving medication for an ear infection, Sugar was accidentally injected with a fatal drug.

The vet gave the horrifying news, telling Turnbill to take Sugar to an emergency hospital in Columbus, Ohio immediately. “We accidentally killed her, and she could die,” she said.

Shocked and frightened, Turnbill rushed to bring her precious family pet MedVet, a full-service 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital. Sugar was removed from her arms as soon as they arrived and taken back to the ICU, where a tracheal tube was placed and she was hooked up to a ventilator.

Turnaround bill was told that there was nothing to do but wait. There was no way to reverse the deadly drug running through her veins. The best they could come up with was to keep Sugar hydrated and intubated for the first critical 24 hours and see if she survived – or slipped.

Sugar made it through that first long night, but a vet at MedVet informed Turnbill that it would take her little body 72 hours to metabolize the drug before they knew the extent of the damage. cause. And, of course, there’s still the chance that she won’t make it through.

Later that day, when the family visited the unconscious dog, her heart rate increased promisingly as they spoke to her. To some degree of unconsciousness, Sugar decided to fight! By the next evening, the little dog was well enough to be taken off the ventilator. Although she still hasn’t woken up, she has moved more and responded to the voices of those who come to visit.

Just 3 days after her terrifying ordeal began, Sugar is out of her coma! Her breathing tube was removed, and she even walked outside to potty, then ate a whole jar of chicken flavored baby food! Turnbill and her overjoyed family can hug their pet dog for the first time in days, but Sugar is not out of the woods yet. She still has to be checked for permanent brain damage.

EEG was performed. It revealed a small possibility of short-term memory loss – and nothing else! The road will be fine! She sometimes got an ulcer in one eye during the emergency, but she was out of danger in the end.

Sugar was taken out of MedVet along with medicines for her injured eye and ear infections. She has to wear a cumbersome electronic necklace around her neck until her check-up appointment next week, but she is miraculously healthy! Her exhausted, bewildered and incredibly grateful family is helping her rest and recuperate at home.

The response to Sugar’s story – posted in a series of updates on Turnbill’s Facebook page – has been astounding. Thousands of people from all over the world have sent their support, love and prayers for a little dog they’ve never met.

Despite the severity of the mistake that almost cost Sugar her life, Turnbill was very positive when it came to posting about the incident. She didn’t mention anger towards the vet who accidentally hurt Sugar. Her words are filled with gratitude for the staff at MedVet, countless messages of support, and her dog’s precious life.
