The Toronto Fire Department, in partnership with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office and the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, has launched a lithium-ion public safety and education campaign called “This is Your Warning” aims to highlight the fire hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries in micro-mobility devices such as e-bikes.

In 2023, the number of fires involving lithium-ion batteries in Toronto increased by 90% compared to 2022. Already this year, there have been 15 fires involving lithium-ion batteries; seven of those fires involved micro-mobility devices.

Lithium-ion batteries power many devices including smartphones, laptops, electric bicycles, and toys. They are generally safe but can pose significant risks if not handled carefully. Lithium-ion batteries store large amounts of energy in a small amount of space, and they can pose a fire hazard if not used properly.

To prevent fires involving lithium-ion batteries, the City’s public education campaign will share information about the risks associated with tampering or using uncertified batteries and why Safe charging, proper storage and disposal of batteries are important.

Tips on how to use lithium-ion batteries safely:

• Keep the lithium-ion battery within sight when charging
• Never tamper or modify the battery.
• Use only certified batteries, approved by the manufacturer.
• Stop using the lithium-ion battery and contact the manufacturer if any of the following signs of problems occur.
  o Smell
  o Change color
  o Too hot
  o Change shape
  o Leaks
  o Strange noises
• Dispose of old or damaged batteries at the City Waste Collection Center or at Community Environmental Day.
