Heatwave Cancels Horseshoe Indianapolis Tuesday Race


Indianapolis horseshoe was to hold regularly scheduled races on June 13 but canceled Tuesday’s card due to a forecast heat index of around 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

“The safety of our riders and participants in the racing program is always our top concern,” said Eric Halstrom, vice president and general manager of racing. “We are taking the appropriate steps to ensure everyone participating in our racing program is safe from the temperatures predicted on Tuesday.”

At this point, the race will resume Wednesday, June 15, at 2:25 p.m. Officials will continue to monitor projected heat readings for Central Indiana over the next several days.

Indianapolis is subject to heat advisories from noon to 9 p.m. ET Monday and from 11 a.m. Tuesday to 9 p.m. ET Wednesday. Weather.com reports heat readings of up to 108 degrees. A heat notice from the National Weather Service is in effect across the Midwest from New Orleans to northwestern Wisconsin and from central Nebraska and throughout Kentucky.

Live racing is conducted at 2:30pm Monday through Wednesday with Thursday posting time set to 2:10pm. A total of 12 Saturdays will feature live races in 2022 marked by the Indiana Derby (G3) and the July 9 Indiana Oaks.
