Heartbroken man saved by a Chihuahua saved more than 30 small dogs

Bobby Humphreys is a big man doing big things in rescue – for the little dogs! Big Guy Littles World Reserve Bobby’s passion project. He cares for and nurtures little Chihuahuas that have had difficult beginnings or have special needs. But just a few years ago if you had told Bobby he was going to spend his days with a bunch of teenage Chihuahuas, he might have called you crazy.

For many years Bobby’s breed was Rottweilers. The handsome, strong dogs are the kind one would guess a big, muscular guy like Bobby would like. He never thought of smaller breeds, and would, in fact, hurt everyone else he saw with pocket-sized pups!

“I would really poke fun at any of my friends who happen to be dating someone who owns a small dog. I never really gave anyone a chance. “

Everything changes slowly. It started when, after 17 years, his marriage abruptly ended. Bobby didn’t see it coming, and the suddenness made the pain worse. The heartbreak was too much to bear, and Bobby considered the end of his own life. But thanks to a friend who refused to let him go that route, he made it through.

“I have lost faith in humanity. I was weak. I want to end it. One person above all, Connie, has kept me on this planet. True friends are always there. In fact, she wouldn’t leave me alone long enough to do what I wanted. She really won’t leave no matter how much I tell her. She has lost such friends before and will not lose me.

“My friend, Connie, showed me what true friendship means. No matter what I need, she is there for me. Needless to say, I feel like I owe her quite a bit.”

One day, Connie asks Bobby for help. She’s moving house and won’t be able to bring her dog: a Chihuahua named Lady, known to be unfriendly. Bobby has met Lady and is not a fan.

Facebook

“Seeing Lady at a friends cookout and hearing stories from Connie and many others, Lady is exactly not someone I want to be around. Connie admits that she is very protective of her and her son, and that she doesn’t really like people. Especially men. So to be honest, I’ve just stayed away from her up to this point.

“Now, to make matters worse, lady, that’s what she would say, a little bit. The lady has clearly decided to eat one day [Connie’s son’s] chemotherapy drugs… Somehow, amazingly, Lady survived. However, after that she wasn’t very well… She was a bit clumsy, a bit out of place, just not okay. “

Because Connie was a good friend, Bobby agreed to take Lady on. He thinks he and his new roommate will do their best to stay away from each other for their new arrangement to work. Connie dropped Lady off when Bobby left for work, and when he got home, she was sitting quietly in her crib under the TV. Bobby decided to take a risk by letting Lady out, and when Connie went there later to see how they got along, Lady was lying on Bobby’s lap, watching TV as if they were old friends!

“[Connie] swear she’s never seen anything like this, this dog hates everyone. Lady and I have really been inseparable ever since.”

Bobby is still grappling with the pain of his sudden separation, but Lady has helped put the pieces of his broken heart back together.

“I am still struggling to grasp everything. There are days when I can’t even get up and go to work. Weeks have turned into months and the only thing that makes me happy is spending time with Lady. I can’t believe how this beautiful 7-pound baby stole my heart.”

But one day he remembers that Lady is not really his dog and will go back to live with Connie and her son when the time comes.

“So I started looking for my own Lady. I have some childhood memories of my grandfather’s Minpin named Lucy which I also enjoyed. I want to find someone like the Lady or find someone like Lucy. “

Bobby’s first find was a brown and tan dog named Kira. His first little dog. She is living in less than perfect conditions, in a house whose floors are muddy from poor construction, and she is untrained and undisciplined.

“When I met her, I was very confident that she would like me because of course, Madam who hates people loves me. Son is I wrong. I got to witness the rampage of a Chihuahua first hand! This puppy literally tried to take my hand off. She won’t come near me, she barks and growls. “

Bobby worries that she will welcome other potential adopters in the same way, and no one wants to give her a good home because of her attitude. To save her, Bobby agrees to take her away in the hope that she will return. At the end of their trip to her new home, she cuddled up with Bobby while he drove.

However, Bobby wanted a dog he could raise since he was a child, and Kira was bigger than he expected, so his search continued. He found his next puppy, Harley, on the Puppy Finder, but quickly realized that something was wrong when he went to pick her up. Bobby was told that Harley came from an unwanted litter after the owners decided to stop keeping their dogs, but one of the children in the house announced that a male dog from the previous litter was being crossed with mother dog to have more children.

“I’m starting to see a pattern here. So many of these beautiful babies are being abused or taken advantage of and I just can’t sit back and watch it happen. This is why I went back for Quinny the next day.”

Facebook

The inbreeding makes the two puppies, Harley and Quinn, whom Bobby calls “twins”, very fragile. Even though Bobby did good to these dogs and they comforted him, he still hurts. The birthday he had that year was especially difficult, and to avoid looking at social media, he decided to scroll through Craigslist instead. That’s where he found Lucy – who happened to be the same color, with the same name, and was his grandfather’s MinPin from many years ago.

Lucy’s owner seems desperate to fix her house. Bobby asks her to keep Lucy for only a few days, but the owner insists that he come that day – his birthday – because of urgent business. She even offered to reduce the rental fee. Bobby drove five hours to meet the little dog and hear her story.

Lucy had been found wandering near the trailer park just a few days earlier. When the woman found her, she knocked on the trailer door until she found Lucy’s previous owner, who told her, “I don’t want that, I’m done! ” From what she gathered from the man, the neighbor, and the emergency vet, Lucy was once a decoy dog, used to train fighting dogs to be more aggressive. Lucy is full of tooth marks, broken bones, starved and terrified of people and other dogs. However, while Bobby was visiting, she had crawled into his lap, and he knew she was his.

During the ride home on a dark highway, she put Bobby’s dedication to the real test. When he stopped for gas, she jumped out of his car and ran. She sped down a busy, unlit highway, and Bobby knew oncoming traffic wouldn’t be able to see her until it was too late.

“I am now in the second lane chasing her on a dark highway at 9pm. I knew there was really no way they could see me until the last second, let alone a four-pound black dog in the dark. I decided to stay in that lane hoping they would see me because they would rush straight at her without looking. I’m thinking to myself, ‘oh my gosh, this is it. I was dying in the middle of a four-lane highway. ‘ Luckily, I was able to catch her due to her previous injury and push her down. When I was about 5 feet away from her, she collapsed, curled into a ball, and buried her head between her legs. It was then that I understood what a hunting dog was. I freeze. The trailer blew its whistle and the wind absolutely blew me away.

Facebook

“I was able to grab her and get her down the street and put her back in the car. I filled up with gas and left the station, but I had to pull over as soon as the adrenaline stopped pumping. I sat there literally crying for over five minutes. I hugged her tightly. The only thing this poor girl knows is survival. She knows that if she can let go, she has to run for her life and when she can’t run anymore, she simply breaks down and accepts her fate. I can imagine the life she had to go through.

“She made me realize how sick and cruel humans can be. She gave me a cause.

“At that point, I realized that saving a dog from a bad situation is better than finding a perfect looking puppy. That’s how my pet got out of control and got seven or eight. Almost all of them come from funny situations. That seems like the right thing to do. “

Since then, Bobby has adopted several other dogs with almost no chance. Georgie, was in poor health overall and lost her eyes due to neglect. Chi Chi, who was tormented by heartworms and herniated discs in her neck. Nugget, who was born with a deformed forelimb and had difficulty walking on his own. And much more.

“We rescue Chihuahuas who are living terrible lives, being abused, hungry, disabled, mentally disabled, etc. We give them a shared home with us where they won’t be. never have to go through abandonment or anything like that again, or we nurture them back to health and through them! We just want to help as many babies as possible.”

Bobby’s big heart has room for everything Chi needs, but the rescue isn’t without its challenges. Since the word understood about Big Guy Littles World Reserve Prayers for help kept pouring in. His relief is mainly due to his self-funding from the work he undertakes as high-end custom flooring. However, with so many special needs dogs that required his time and care, he had less time to do his job.

“Honestly, the biggest challenge is finance.”

But money will not stand between him and showing love to dogs that have never had it before. Bobby currently has about 35 dogs in care but is expected to have about 40 next week. Some dogs have since found happy homes elsewhere. Some have passed away knowing they were loved at least for a short while. Some will spend the rest of their lives being cared for by Bobby. There may be no money in it, but he says the returns are even better.

Facebook

“What was the most rewarding part? That’s the simplest answer yet. You have watched the videos. I have 34 reasons now why all the stress and hardship is worth it. There isn’t a single piece that I can’t pick up and receive love and affection from that doesn’t change my day for the better.”
