Hands-on: We review the Insta360’s ONE RS

The latest camera from the ONE R is getting an upgrade, adding some essential features.

Insta360 has announced a new 4K module and “body” for their R series of cameras. In addition, the battery and accessories have been upgraded. These are the best.

Update parameters

4K . Module

  • New 1/2” 48MP sensor.
  • HDR “Active”.
  • 6K with widescreen 2.35:1 crop.
  • Slightly wider and f/2.4 instead of f/2.8.

Core / Camera Body

  • “Flowstate” stabilization is finally built into the camera.
  • Additional microphone.
  • Two new touch buttons for quick menu and zoom.

Worth the upgrade?

If you already own a ONE CHEAP, then I honestly don’t recommend upgrading, at least not entirely. Luckily, the modular design means you can choose whatever you think you need.

The ONE RS doesn’t feel completely different from the R. Unfortunately, Insta360 didn’t take the time to create a better SD card door; it is quite thin and easy to fall off. However, the similarities allow the former modules to work with the new system.

If you already own R and want a small upgrade, here’s what I would go for:

  • Camera cage.
  • Larger battery (for mounting in a new camera cage).
  • New invisible selfie stick.

The new cage is great. It’s a bit like SmallRig’s and makes swapping modules much easier. Larger batteries are always welcome. Then the updated selfie stick is half the size of the old one and the same length when unfolded. These small upgrades make life easier without the expense of a brand new camera. Insta360 is releasing a Quick Reading Accessory can clone SD cards from these cameras and transfer files to your smartphone. Perhaps this could turn out to be another inexpensive add-on.

Future (of Mods)

The ONE R hints that Insta360 will make additional modules/lens. Now the ONE RS is that upgrade, but it’s not what I expected. I wonder if they release modules for specific tasks like low light and tighter crops.

Instead, we were given new technology. Having in-camera “Flow” stabilization is a worthwhile upgrade. Usually, this will require the use of the respective application. Therefore, 4K and 1-inch modules now make more sense. It records a regular MP4 file with less intrusiveness.

Perhaps the upgraded ONE RS body will be able to handle more bandwidth, making room for new modules on the way. Can the new core handle 8K resolution? Maybe 10-bit footage?

Why buy ONE RS?

Since this is an incremental upgrade, I think all the points I’ve made in ONE R review still keep. This camera is for users who need an action-ready 360-degree camera and the dynamic offerings of a fixed-lens action camera. The addition of better MP4 modes could help consumers better understand RS. However, Insta360’s X2 may be more suitable for general consumers.

While the ONE RS makes photography easier than ever, I’m confident that professionals and enthusiasts alike will get the most out of it. It’s a reliable camera that’s capable of future upgrades.

The “Dual version” with 4K and 360 mods will retail for $550. 4K mod pack will cost $300and 1 inch mod pack will cost $550.
