If you’re into the world of film photography, you know that stock of film from various manufacturers is either being discontinued or rapidly becoming more expensive. The latest example of this happened last month when Kodak announced it has increased the price of its various film stocks by 9–15%.
As is often the case with the sudden price change, Kodak immediately drew criticism from members of the film photography community, many of whom argued that Kodak wasn’t supporting film photographers as much as they thought. In response to this criticism, two respected entities in the world of film photography, Silver Bead Classic and Nico from Nico Photography Show, attempted to contextualize these rallies in an attempt to appease the community.
While their respective efforts seem to have been well done by the film photography community, Matthew Wright, written on 35mmc, there is a slight difference in the price increase of the film.
In her essay, titled ‘The Cinematic Community Has a Problem. Not a matter of Film Price or Kodak, ‘Wright analyzes a number of ways that film photography is being affected beyond mere price increases to account for inflation, supply chain constraints and more.
It’s a well-written piece that focuses more on the economics and history of the film photography community than the more topical reason we’re used to hearing. You can read his full article, which is just over 3,000 words, below:
