Government to set up more unsubsidized fuel stations – Kelantan, Sarawak next, Perak, Johor, Kedah next

The government piloted a new type of fuel station that sells unsubsidized fuel in February 2023. Available at two locations in Padang Besar and Wang Kelian in Perlis, these stations sell unsubsidized RON95 gasoline. graded at RM3.22/litre and unsubsidized diesel at RM3.45 per litre.

This compares with the subsidized RON95 petrol at RM2.05/litre and the subsidized B10 diesel at RM2.15, the difference being RM1.17 (57%) and RM1.30 respectively ( 60%)/liter.

The above unsubsidized prices are at the time of launch. It seems that the current unsubsidized price is RM3.05/litre for RON95 petrol and RM3/litre for B10 diesel. Although not subsidized, the price per liter is still cheaper than the price of 3.35 Ringgit / liter of RON97 gasoline.

According to a report by NST, sales of subsidized fuel at Perlis fell 15.7% for RON95 gasoline and 15.7% for diesel in the first two months of implementation. Meanwhile, two non-subsidized petrol stations recorded an increase of 42.27% for RON95 gasoline and 14.75% for diesel sales.

As a result, the government has saved RM5 million in RON95 petrol and diesel subsidies each month, so the pilot project is considered a success.

The pilot program will be extended to stations at Rantau Panjang and Bukit Bunga in Kelantan, and Tebudu, Ba’Kalan and Lundu in Sarawak. More stations are planned at Pengkalan Hulu in Perak, Johor Causeway and Second Link in Johor, Padang Besar and Wang Kelian in Perlis, and Bukit Kayu Hitam in Kedah.
